As a parent, you may wonder what your little one gets up to when you are not around: be it at child care, with friends or just around the house. I’m sure you have asked many times over a family dinner or car ride…what did you do today? What did you learn? More often than not, I’d hazard a guess that their response maybe something along the lines of “I played” or even “I did nothing!”. This, believe it or not, is actually a good thing! We know play is the work of a child, so children should feel as if they are immersed in their play (or even just lost in their own world) most of the time. However, their responses don’t often give us much information as an adult, and of course, we want to know what our little humans have been up to! You want to know what they are learning and perhaps even where your money is going- luckily for our Little Nomad families, we totally understand this.
At Little Nomads we aim to ‘make learning visible’ for both our parents and children. Making Learning Visible originates from the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s ‘Project Zero’ initiative. Project Zero’s mission is to understand and enhance learning, thinking and creativity for individuals and groups in the arts and other disciplines from early childhood through to adult learners. Today, Project Zero researches and provides resources and professional development on a wide range of topics including collaboration, critical thinking, learning environments, documentation and much much more. The Making Learning Visible project aims to create strong learning cultures using documenta
tion as a tool to deepen and extend learning. Assessment, evaluation, and documentation are essential to any teaching and learning process. The way learning is documented directly influences what happens in a child’s next session and learning opportunity.
Once you become part of the Little Nomad family, you will be given access to a fantastic app called ‘Seesaw’. Seesaw is a platform that empowers children to create, reflect, share, and collaborate. Throughout their learning journey, they “show what they know” using photos, videos, drawings and voice recordings. It enables young learners to share their learning, helps us as educators to capture and record learning in action, and enables you as parents to see how learning takes place when you are not around. As part of our official welcome pack (coming soon to our enrolled families), you will receive further information about how to set up Seesaw on your device as well as our photo sharing policy at Little Nomads.
